Electronic ballasts for linear, compact fluorescent and discharge lamps

Electronic ballast for light sources - linear fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, discharge lamps. Electronic ballast (high frequency ballast) is a compact electronic device that lights the fluorescent lamp and after lighting it supplies AC power to the light source, replaces a set of devices: choke, starter, compensation capacitor, can be part of the light source or luminaire from the factory.

Electronic ballast (high frequency ballast) is a compact electronic device

  • that lights the fluorescent lamp and, after lighting, supplies AC power to the light source
  • replaces a set of devices: choke, starter, compensation capacitor
  • can be part of the light source or luminaire from the factory

Analog dimmable electronic ballasts

  • are controlled by a small DC voltage of 0-10V (1-10V), which is fed from the dimmer by a separate line
  • switching on and off of the fluorescent lamp must be provided by a switch included in the dimmer
  • the dimmer for fluorescent lamps shall be mounted in place of a conventional switch
  • unlike incandescent lighting, it is not possible to simply replace the switch with a dimmer, precisely because of the need for a separate control line. One dimmer can control several ballasts.

Digitally dimmable electronic ballasts

  • are controlled by one of the bus control systems (EIBA) again by a separate line
  • the DALI protocol is commonly used for control, which can be used to control, especially switching and dimming, a large number of luminaires in an addressable manner
  • digitally dimmable ballasts are often equipped with a switch-dimm function. This allows the ballasts to be controlled with a simple push button
  • The ballast in the luminaire is connected to the power supply and the control phase is fed to it via the push button. A short press of the button switches the luminaire on/off, holding it down dims it. The ballast is equipped with a memory, so that when the light is switched off and on again, it is set to the same value
  • the advantage of this system is the possibility to control the luminaire with a larger number of parallel connected buttons from more places and to use buttons of any manufacturer. There is no need to be tied to whether there are dimmers in the same design as the other switches used
  • An electronic ballast combined with an inverter for emergency lighting is a device which, in a single mountingm assembly containing both the electronic ballast and the inverter for charging the battery and the inverter for powering the fluorescent lamps from the battery
