News in LED lighting autumn 2014

LED lighting is probably the fastest growing lighting and lighting technology. The biggest advantage of LED light sources is their durability and efficiency, or the power input/light output ratio. Development has further increased their efficiency, which is now higher than that of energy saving bulbs, fluorescent lamps and the latest LED chips even outperform some discharge lamps. New LED light sources are also being developed to replace the convectional ones. Examples include new LED tubes or bulbs that mimic conventional filament bulbs. Here is the first part of the new products from Philips for this autumn.

Clear LED bulbs with imitation filament

The new wide filament imitation bulb has the features you expect from a normal 40W bulb, i.e.

- 470lm luminous intensity,

- incandescent light (2700°K),

- dimmable,

- E27 base,

- has the same dimensions as a standard bulb - height (C) 110mm, diameter (D) 58mm (see picture).

In addition

- it has a wattage of only 6W,

- a lifetime of 25,000 hours,

- and doesn't mind frequent switching cycles.

So this new product will complement the MasterLED Candle and MasterLED chandelier series. These two series of bulbs from Philips can beautifully replace traditional clear bulbs. The first and more powerful variant has an input of 6W, a luminous intensity of 470lm and replaces a 40W bulb. The second variant has a wattage of 4W, a luminous intensity of 250lm and replaces a 25W bulb. The light temperature is 2700°K, the same as for conventional bulbs. Both variants are dimmable, they are supplied with E14 (miniature) or E27 (classic) thread. The E14 thread comes with candle bulbs, which look great in chandeliers. With E14 and E27 threads they come with a small round bulb, also for chandeliers and finally with the large classic E27 thread they come with a classic shaped bulb.

If you have a classic chandelier and need to replace classic incandescent or energy saving bulbs in it, these LED bulbs are the way to go.

What's more, as technology advances and more lamps are sold, the price of these bulbs is fallingbulbs, which are still more expensive than unbranded LED bulbs, but surpass them in quality, durability and even performance.

CorePro LED bulb - replacement for 100W incandescent bulb.

After the MasterLED bulb, which replaces a 100W bulb with 1521lm, comes a "cheaper" variant that differs in its design, which resembles the size and shape of a classic incandescent bulb, and especially in the fact that it is not dimmable. The basic parameters are

- luminous intensity 1521lm,

- the lifetime indicated by the manufacturer is 15000h,

- the colour of the light is incandescent, i.e. 2700°K,

- E27 socket,

- not dimmable

- power consumption 15W

- equivalent to a 100W incandescent bulb

- dimensions - height 138mm, diameter 68mm.

So Philips is getting 85% energy saving in this bulb category compared to a conventional bulb.

The price is also lower than the MasterLED replacement for the 100W bulb, so here we have the ideal bulb replacement where we need it to really shine a lot.

In the next section we'll look at other new products:

  • LED capsule on G4 socket
  • LED tube for electronic ballasts
